About this cause

The iGEM competition is an annual worldwide synthetic biology competition in which teams work to build an artificial biological system to solve real world problems or advance the field of synthetic biology at the foundational level. It was started in 2004 and the competition promotes open source synthetic biology and the teams have to submit the biological 'DNA parts' to the registry and can use parts submitted by earlier teams.

IIT Madras has participated in 8 editions of the competition, winning 3 silver medals and 3 gold medals. In addition, our 2013 team won the Best Human Practices Award, Asia Regional Jamboree Prize and the 2008 team won the Best Foundational Advance and Best New BioBrick Part/Device Engineered Prizes.

In 2017, the team aims to use microbial electrosynthesis, a phenomenon by which microbial metabolism can be driven by electricity with carbon dioxide as the main carbon source. We aim to create a synthetic biology platform that utilizes carbon dioxide and electricity to produce desired reduced carbon products.
